Drive Profile >>> Meet Shawn Hawley!
Well, Better late then never I suppose. Shawn Hawley; What can i say about the guy? He drives one of my favorite cars on the track in Western Canada, he is an amazing guy, hard worker, and overall good person! It was nice to see some of his answers to my questions. This interview was done before DMCC West Round One along with bad weather and both of us having full time jobs. This is being posted after DMCC West Round One, I’m sorry its taken so long! I’ve been slammed busy! So I’m sorry Shawn! But here it is now!
Everyone meet Shawley of Cheeseburger Drift( Also of Certified Radio and Clarion).
OMG) So, Shawn. How did you get started in drifting? And what is cheeseburger drift?
SH) I actually started out as the media guy, since 2005 I’ve been coming out to events and practices to film and put together videos and just been around it since then. And in 2008 I had my Chaser down in Portland visiting friends that had PIR (Portland International Raceway) rented out for the day for a drift day, and took the car out that day drifting for the first time ever in the Chaser. After I got back to Canada I started going to more drift practices to drive rather than to film and over that winter I prepped the car for DMCC and started driving Pro the next year! As for Cheeseburger Drift that’s just a nick name my friend Joey came up with when he was drinking and it stuck I guess. It also might have something to do with us BBQing in the pits of events, keep a look out for the Clarion V8 BBQ in my pits this year!
OMG) What cars have you drifted in the past? And why did you choose to stick with the Chaser?
SH) I’ve owned many JDM cars over the years (Skylines, Aristo’s, MarkII, etc) but I’ve only taken my old R32 Skyline out to the track once. I have however drifted a few friends S13’s here and there and then of course the countless hours of winter driving over the years in any RWD vehicle I’ve owned. I picked the Chaser because I love 4 door’s especially Toyota’s. I had bought a 4 door R32 with the intent of making it a drift car, but then my JZX90 Chaser came up at Auction in Japan and it was one of the first LEGAL (for import) JZX90’s that was manual that I had seen so I put a bid in, won the car and had to sell the R32 before I could ship the Chaser over. At that time the Chaser was just to be a fun daily driver, and was never at first intended to be a Drift car, that is before I had the chance to drift it at PIR.
OMG) Do you prefer to Follow or Lead? Why?
SH) I really prefer to follow, that way I can get to learn all the other drivers driving style, and see how each driver decides to attack the course.
OMG) How did you get started in DMCC?
SH) Well in 2009 I signed up after building the car up to DMCC Safety specs, and just threw myself at the Pro season and came out with Rookie of the Year!
OMG) Where do you hope to take your drifting?
SH) I honestly just want to see the sport grow in Canada and help it grow over. As for myself I would first like to be able to compete in DMCC East and West in the same season, then eventually I would love to hit up some American events anything from XDC to Formula D!
OMG) What are you most excited for in the 2011 DMCC West season?
SH) I’m most excited to get out and drive! Although I’m very excited for another BC event, Victoria in 2009 was a great experience, and I think Penticton Speedway should be just as great! The only thing I’m not looking forward to is the gas in my 6.0l Chevy to tow my car through the mountains in BC!
OMG) Who do you look forward the most to compete against? And Why?
SH) Conroy Ganson!!!!!!!!!!!! Conroy is a good friend and always helps me out off the track when I need it but 2 times last year I was up against him in top 16 and he came out on top both times. This year it’s gonna be time for the 4door to take that FD of his out!
OMG) What are your goals for the 2011 DMCC West season?
SH) Have a much fun as possible, get as much seat time as possible, don’t blow up anymore transmissions or loose anymore serpentine belts! Oh and to podium every event! That’s on the list too!
OMG) Are you excited to compete in the rain(again?)
SH) Rain???? Ummmmmmm I’m gonna pray that it doesn’t rain! Besides it’s Alberta the weather changes every 5 minutes, so we’ll probably have some rain, snow, hail, windstorm, and then some +40 heat all in the same day!
OMG) Give us a rundown on what the car is running, as detailed as possible please! (Parts, Power, And Sex Factor)
