Hella Norcal Dopeness >>> Gabe Stone’s Camaro
Wait, what? A Camaro? And not even a 2010 Camaro, but an ’89 Camaro? What the heck is going on here??
That’s right, Gabe Stone of San Jose drifts a 1989 Chevy Camaro RS, and he’s not too bad at it. He finished 4th overall at ThunderDrift last season and is currently 10th in points at ThunderDrift ProAm this season. I met up with Gabe over at Blu808 yesterday for a quick shoot and interview.
AB: Hey Gabe, I’m going to interview you for OMGDrift.com, okay?
AB: How long have you been drifting?
GS: Around 2 years or so. Oh yea, my first event was December 08.
AB: And why the Camaro? Why not a more traditional or proven platform?
GS: Well, I’ve had it for a long time. It’s my first car and the only one I’ve ever had, so why not?
AB: Do people talk shit about it?
GS: Certainly not to my face, haha. I’d say most people are cool with it, and like seeing different cars out there. The real problem is that there’s no knowledge base really, so I’m doing a lot of R&D and guessing to see what works. It’s definitely been fun.
AB: And how did you decide you wanted to drift?
GS: I live right next to some pretty cool mountain roads so I’ve always been a fan of driving in twisties. Then I saw Initial D around 2003 or so and I said “I think I’ll try that!” I was really scared and sucked and eventually crashed. Wait, did I say I was scared? Can we take that part out?
AB: Sure thing.
AB: So how did you find ThunderDrift?
GS: I worked at Wheel Works in Los Gatos, which shares a parking lot with BR Racing. I met Luke Lonberger when he worked at BR, and he invited me to come to the track, and the rest is history.
AB: Awesome. What are your plans with drifting?
GS: I’m keeping the Camaro for sure, then I’ll just work on getting better and making the car better.
AB: Speaking of making the car better, what have you done to it so far?
GS: Nothing too major, I’ve got a roll bar, Sparco seats, sway bars, Eibach springs, Koni shocks, and an Eaton LSD, which I just put in today, plus a bunch of other little things.
AB: Sounds good to me! Well that’s it! Thanks for the interview, Gabe!
GS: Thanks OMGDrift!
